1. Please use the STARR reflection model to reflect on your experience BEFORE conducting the SULAM project.

Hi and good days to everyone who read this post. Before I start writing my first reflection, SULAM is an educational experience in which students participate in a structured service activity that meets identified community needs. At first, I do not know what e-SULAM is, until our beloved Dr. Rafeah introduces this topic with full details. Dr. Rafeah explanation was very good and full of intel. She also mentioned how to write a reflection using the STARR model.

The mission that has been assigned to us is to reach out to a community in order to raise awareness or teach them about the importance of the project that we will be working on. When we discussed this initiative, we were urged to participate in the community's e-SULAM waste management project. Everything has been deployed online since the beginning of the Covid-19 situation, so I'm concerned about how to approach this project, particularly in terms of finding a good community with whom to engage.

We agreed to meet online using Zoom and Google Meet to find a solution to this challenge. We met on March 21st at 8:30 p.m. because everyone was available at that time. We were first uneasy with each other because we had never met in person. Fortunately, we overcome the uneasiness and begin to chat prior to our previous connection while conducting various tests. The talk is going well. At some time, we attempt to lighten the mood by making jokes, and then we address things professionally and seriously. The app ran out of time due to the limitations of utilizing the Zoom app, which only permitted us to use it for 40 minutes. Then we reconvene on Google Meets to continue the conversation. I learned a lot from our conversation because I only think of papers, masks, tissues, plastic bottles, tin and cans, and leftover food as garbage. I also did not realize that some of the waste listed can be handled or repurposed to reduce environmental impact.

We split the work for each person to do at the end of our conversation. I chose to be a co-leader of the team and support our leader, Ain, in managing such a large programmed in this new (online) setting. I suggest the name of the group for your information, and I will assist our leader in organizing this programmed from now on. I'm also in charge of creating gorgeous and instructive posters with Lucy to share on our official Instagram account, greengables.unimas (go follow).

The name of our group is "Green Gables," and the title of our planned project is "Green Beyond Belief." Some difficulties, such as locating our targeted community, have yet to be confirmed. We plan to send our group representative, Ain, to Dr. Rafeah for guidance and confirming about our plan so far. Dr. Rafeah told us the next day which is on 22 March that we needed to establish an external community. As a result, we decided to meet again on March 24.

2. Use the following questions to guide you in writing your reflection:

  • What are the underlying issue related to waste management that you feel is important to address?

The underlying challenges with waste management are due to an increase in the use of solid trash, green waste, and special garbage as the world's population grows. In addition to the rising population, the need for basic necessities such as plastic will result in the development of several industrial zones. Issues such as the loss of important resources, increased landfill usage, which causes pollution, and the possible risks associated with trash will continue to grow with each passing day until we discover the right answer. As a result, I believe it is critical for every community to recognize these challenges. As we can see from the news, waste around the world is getting riskier. Hence, by conducting this project we can propose a solution where everyone no matter what group of age, can do and together fix this crisis and minimize the effects that will occur.

  • What contribution can you make to the public understanding of this issue through your proposed SULAM project?

My contribution to public knowledge of the concerns through our planned e-SULAM initiative is that no matter how young you are, if you can make a difference in your everyday practice beginning at home, you can inspire others to do the same. So, as a result of this project, I'd like to attempt composting my green trash at home before educating or demonstrating the necessity of green waste management to my target group.

  • How do feel at the beginning of your SULAM project planning?

Firstly, I would want to state that this project may be the most significant that has occurred to me throughout my time at UNIMAS, and as a result, I'm both afraid and nervous. I'm also concerned that doing it for the first time would jeopardize my academic success. This assignment is extremely large for me to complete, but with the support of my teammates, I believe it will go well.

Personally, I am very satisfied with the progress of our team had reached even though we have not yet conducted this e-SULAM project. I hope to get as much information and experience as possible in the field of waste management so that I can contribute to our community in the future.

That is all for my first reflection, and i hope i will our programmed going well according to our planning. Thank you for spending your time reading my reflection. Kiss kiss <3
